Incidences of motor vehicle theft increased by 20.79% while larceny-theft, assault, rape, and robbery decreased by 8.8%, 4.42%, 9.09%, and 17% respectively. Compared to 2016, the year-to-year crime total decreased by 7.38%, dropping from 21,561 offenses. Assaults were the most common type of violent crime. Larceny-theft accounted for most reports with 9,052 incidents, making it the most common property crime. According to records released in 2017, Lubbock County recorded a total of 20,244 offenses.
